Candelabrum 224
This large five-branch candelabrum is a beautiful piece with fine details that challanges the silversmithy. The candelabrum has a fluted stem which stands on a domed circular base with four scroll supports. The scrolling branches has a spiral fluted centre and Dolphin finial.
Johan Rohde’s designs are characterised by hammer marks and oxidisation techniques. His designs are also highly stylised in comparison with the naturalistic Art Nouveau style, however not strictly geometrical either like the typical Art Déco style that followed. Johan Rohde’s designs can therefore be classified neither as Art Nouveau nor Art Déco; instead something in between.
The silversmith spends a significant amount of time lining up, measuring and double checking that everything is in balance and leveled – horizontally as well as vertically – before soldering. As with all other candlesticks and candelabra, if it is not in perfect level the candles will not burn even and drip.
