PENUMBRA
DESIGNED BY DAVID THULSTRUP
Renowned Danish architect and designer David Thulstrup is behind Penumbra: an impressive centrepiece handmade from sterling silver.
Seamlessly juxtaposing contrasting geometric expressions, the masterpiece brings together different Georg Jensen eras into one sumptuous design.
FORMS COMBINED
A careful composition of shape
Penumbra’s carefully devised design combines a rectangular outline with an oval-shaped centre that recesses into the hollow structure. With perfect symmetry, the design is reproduced on both sides of the rectangular surface, where the two sunken ellipses almost touch each other.
DESIGN ERAS MEET
Art Nouveau and functionalism into one contemporary design
Visiting the archives, David Thulstrup drew inspiration from silversmith Georg Jensen’s recurring use of a specific oval shape in silver centrepieces dating back to the 1910s. He combined this with the strict, functionalist forms of Sigvard Bernadotte’s well-known designs for Georg Jensen.
LIGHT AND SHADOW
It’s in the name: a stunning play of light
The new silver masterpiece takes its name from the Latin term referring to a space of partial illumination. Penumbra, in fact, alludes to the design’s beautiful play of light created by the combination of different geometric shapes.
A CRAFT UPHELD
Expert techniques give life to a unique design
Made in solid sterling silver, Penumbra is crafted and hammered by hand in Copenhagen by skilled silversmiths. Producing the piece requires at least ten years of experience with the craft. The design’s stunning surface includes over 3000 hammer marks, and it takes approximately four months to produce one piece from start to end.
